Available at our Gardeners Delight Nursery and online

Clematis are climbers that can be used in a garden to cover walls, and climb pergolas. Many varieties of clematis are scented and evergreen, and many provide a second flowering during the year. Clematis will grow in humus rich soil, and in sunny to partial shade positions. We are proud to be a licensed grower of the Raymond Evison ranges of clematis probably one of the finest clematis breeders in the world. We also grow many of the older varieties along with Honey suckles and passiflora. All our clematis are grown in 2 litre deep pots ready to plant and not in small 9cm liner pots. click here

Hints

  • Clematis need their roots kept cool, so top-dress the pot with a layer of pebbles, plant low-growing plants like summer bedding in the same container, or position other planted containers on the sunward side.
  • Containers dries out quickly, Water these most days between April and October, keeping an eye on moisture levels during dry spells at other times of the year, for as long as they stay in the pot.

Planting Tips

  • Dig a hole, at least twice as wide as the pot in which the plant is growing and half as deep again.
  • Plant in a good open and well drained soil with plenty of leaf mould to keep the roots moist.
  • Most varieties enjoy lime and like to grow with their roots in the shade and their leaves in the sun.
  • Add some well rotted organic compost (leaf-mould, decayed manure, etc) to the bottom of the hole, add a handful of fertiliser. Soak the plant well before carefully removing the plant with its cane support from the container.
  • Newly planted clematis will need regular watering whilst they establish. All clematis will need watering during hot dry periods. A thorough, deep soaking once a week is better than watering little and often.
  • Feed your Clematis each year in late winter or early spring. Spread a slow-release, potassium-rich fertiliser around the base of the plant and apply a mulch afterwards of organic matter such as well-rotted manure or compost.
  • In early spring, put some slug/snail prevention in place to prevent damage to young shoots.
  • Consider how you will support your plant’s stems. Herbaceous clematis are best grown through plant supports or into nearby shrubs, while climbing types will need something to twine around, like trellis or mesh attached to a wall or fence.
